Axis Career Hub FAQ

Program Overview

  • This program is a chance for people to connect with other design professionals to learn about areas in their expertise. Ask the “stupid” questions and get answers for things that is hard to find/no one tells you. It’s hard enough navigating your career and it’s even harder to find people to support you and form long term relationships with that have been through what you have. This program can be a one time session to get your questions answered or you can set up quarterly, monthly or bi-weekly sessions to connect and discuss your progress, get support and guidance from real industry professionals.

  • This program is for everyone but it has been especially helpful for new grads, new immigrants and students. The mentors have been carefully vetted to be approachable, supportive, helpful and also successful in their careers so they can guide you in navigating yours.

  • Our mentors are well versed in project delivery, networking, building relationships, getting licensed, making successful portfolios and resumes. This program is meant to help you be successful and have someone to lean on. • We don’t spoon feed you, we teach you how to feed yourself. We don’t just do resume reviews, the idea is to do resume coaching so you understand the point of the resume, how it impacts how you present to an employer so every time you’re applying throughout your career, you’ll be equipped to write it yourself. We take a very personalized approach. Every single person is different and that’s the beauty of the design industry. Whether it’s strengths or areas of improvement - we focus on how to help YOU navigate the industry. We care.

Structure & Process

  • We use a two-step system to keep scheduling accurate, respectful of mentor time, and set you up for a productive session.

Step 1: Schedule your session and enter payment details
You’ll select a time that works for you and securely enter your payment details to hold the booking. This allows us to review your intake form in advance and match you with the right mentor, so the session is tailored and valuable from the start. Your card will only be charged after the session is completed.

Holding payment details also helps reduce no-shows, which is important as our mentors are working professionals with limited availability. It ensures their time is respected and used intentionally.

    Step 2: Attend your session
At the scheduled time, you’ll meet with your mentor for your session. Once the session is complete, your card will be charged automatically.

This process keeps everything organized, respects the mentors’ time, and ensures your session is fully prepared, personalized, and worth the investment.

  • The mentees get to choose the mentors. If you’re unsure of who the right person - just email mentors@axisrecruitment.ca to tell us about what you’re looking for support with. Our team will connect you with the right mentor.

  • Each mentor has their own specialty. We support with resume, portfolio, interview prep, job search strategy, project delivery, any questions you might have about detailing or design. We’ve selected a wide range of mentors so you can get the best out of this program.

  • The sessions are one hour long. You can book as many as you want but we suggest you start with one session. If further sessions are required you can discuss that with your mentor.

  • Yes, you can choose your mentor. If you’re unsure of which mentor is best for you, you can fill our this discovery form and our team will send a recommendation for what you’re looking for.

Many people start with one session to get oriented, then add additional sessions based on their goals, upcoming interviews, or portfolio needs.

All of our mentors have full-time roles outside of this program and volunteer their limited time to support emerging professionals. To respect their schedules and ensure fairness for all users, we cannot reopen or refund missed sessions.

  • No. There are absolutely no hidden fees.
We’ve intentionally structured the program to be as transparent and affordable as possible, because most of the people who come to us are students, newcomers, or individuals who are between jobs and trying to find their footing.

Our goal is to give you real value for every minute you spend with a mentor. There are no surprise charges, upsells, or add-ons you didn’t agree to. What you see at checkout is exactly what you pay.

We run this program with the belief that high-quality guidance shouldn’t be limited to people with large budgets. Our mentors participate because they genuinely care about giving back to the industry and helping people move forward - especially those who don’t have access to support elsewhere.

Everything about our pricing is designed to be fair, clear, and aligned with that mission.

  • Yes. We can invoice organizations for team sessions, workshops, training sessions, and student cohorts. If you're a school, teacher, or studio lead, we’re always happy to support classroom learning - our mentors genuinely enjoy sharing their knowledge with students and emerging professionals.

Recommendations

  • We recommend 2 sessions:
    • Session 1: Mock interview, narrative structure, identifying gaps. Refining answers, portfolio walkthrough, final practice before the interview
    • Session 2: Technical interview preparation.

  • Document Review (if you already have a draft)
If you have a resume, portfolio, or cover letter already created and need targeted feedback:
1 document review is recommended for a detailed critique and actionable edits.
    • Most candidates find it helpful to add a final document review once their revised draft is complete, especially before submitting applications.

Learning How to Build a Portfolio or Resume
If you need guidance on creating a resume or portfolio from scratch or want to understand structure, content, or visual direction:
1 live session is typically enough to walk through approach, layout, examples, and strategy.
    • Pairing this with a document review (after you implement the guidance) gives you a complete start-to-finish process.

    Portfolio Review & Development
1 session for light feedback or minor adjustments
2–3 sessions for deeper restructuring, visual hierarchy, storytelling, formatting, and preparing a submission-ready book

  • Start with 1 session to build an overall plan, then add sessions as you progress.

  • For long-term career development, we recommend working with a combination of recruiter mentors and industry professionals. This gives you both sides of the insight—market realities and internal practice experience.

Ongoing mentorship (monthly or bi-monthly) to stay accountable, adjust goals, and navigate new opportunities
At least 2 sessions upfront to establish direction, assess strengths, and map out the next steps in your growth plan

  • 2–3 sessions to build or refine a program-ready portfolio
    • Additional reviews depending on program requirements

  • 2 sessions to learn Canadian industry expectations, adapt your resume/portfolio, and build a strong job-search strategy
    • These two sessions are usually more than enough to get you oriented. We’ll also equip you with resources so you can continue developing your documents and applications independently.
    • We typically recommend working with a combination of mentors — one from recruitment for market alignment and one from your discipline for technical context and industry standards.
